I had packed enough work for the whole journey. Then the train followed a river into the hills, and I closed the laptop. For an hour, the landscape was the only thing on my schedule.
Let the journey belong to the trip
Travel days can feel like an inconvenience to minimise. On this journey I tried treating the hours between places as part of being away. I watched industrial edges become gardens, fields and small stations.
Not every route is scenic, comfortable or accessible. Choose transport that works for you and check current arrangements. The idea is simply to notice the journey you are taking, whatever form it has.
Pack for the hours you actually have
A notebook, water and a little food made the trip easier. I kept important information available offline and left some room in my bag. That small preparation meant I could relax without depending on a perfect connection.
I had brought a book but barely opened it. Looking out of the window turned out to be enough. It was pleasant to carry an option without feeling obliged to use it.
Arrive without rushing to begin again
At the destination, I walked to where I was staying and had a simple dinner. The first evening did not need to contain a major event. I had already travelled, and that was quite a lot.
By morning, I was ready to look around. I had missed nothing by letting that first evening be dinner and a place to sit.
I packed work for the whole journey. The river outside the window changed that plan.
