The town was less than an hour away, which was probably why I had never stayed there. I had passed through it on the way to somewhere more impressive. A free weekend gave it a chance to be the destination.

Choose somewhere you have overlooked

I found a small place to stay near the centre and made one plan: visit the Saturday market. Everything else could wait until I arrived. Familiar geography made the trip simple, but sleeping somewhere different changed how I paid attention.

You do not need an overnight stay to borrow this approach. A day in a nearby neighbourhood can work too. Check opening hours, transport and access before you leave, then make room around one thing you want to do.

Spend your curiosity locally

At the market I bought bread and asked where to find a quiet walk. The answer led me to a path beside the old mill, a place I would have missed on a list of highlights. I stayed long enough to finish the bread.

A local business is somebody’s workplace. Ask questions when there is time to answer, buy something if you want it and accept that a recommendation may be as simple as a nearby path.

Bring one discovery back

When I returned home, I looked for a similar walk in my own neighbourhood. The trip had reminded me that I was capable of curiosity; I had simply been saving it for holidays.

The nearby town was easy to reach, but staying there broke the habit of passing through. That gave me a reason to look more closely.

There may be a good weekend hiding in a place you normally pass through.
